Salmonella Outbreak from Cantaloupe Declared Over by CDC, Caused 6 Deaths and 158 Hospitalizations

Atlanta, GA – The recent salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupe has been declared over by the Centers for Disease Control, following a widespread illness across multiple states and in Canada.

More than 400 individuals fell sick in 44 states due to the tainted cantaloupe, resulting in 158 hospitalizations and six deaths. The outbreak also affected Canadians, with over 160 cases and seven deaths reported in the country.

The specific brands impacted by the outbreak were Malchita and Rudy, which were distributed by various retailers including Kwik Trip, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s between September and December 2023.

The Food & Drug Administration has issued a warning for consumers to check if any cantaloupe products in their possession were part of the recall, especially if they were stored in the freezer. Experts advise consumers who are unsure about the status of their cantaloupe products to dispose of them as a precautionary measure.
