Sailor Tyrone Foley Honored by Whitehouse City Council with “Tyrone Dwayne Foley Day”

Whitehouse, Texas – The Whitehouse City Council recently paid tribute to one of its native sons, Tyrone Foley, who tragically lost his life in the USS Iowa explosion that occurred 35 years ago. Foley, a 1980 graduate of Whitehouse High School, was among the 47 sailors who perished in the incident off the coast of Puerto Rico on April 19, 1989.

During the council meeting, a proclamation was approved declaring April 19, 2024, as “Tyrone Dwayne Foley Day” in honor of his memory. The proclamation highlighted Foley’s achievements as a student and athlete, commending his exceptional skills as a wide receiver on the Wildcat football team and his contributions to basketball and track.

Foley’s impact extended beyond the athletic field, as he was also an active member of the Smith Temple Church of God in Christ, where he showcased his musical talents and dedication to his faith. Mayor James Wansley expressed the community’s deep sense of loss at Foley’s untimely passing, praising his courage, integrity, and selflessness as qualities that exemplified the true spirit of a sailor.

In addition to his academic and athletic accomplishments, Foley pursued further education in drafting at Tyler Junior College, demonstrating his commitment to personal growth and development. Mayor Wansley emphasized the importance of honoring Foley’s legacy by continuing to uphold the values he embodied in service to the country and fellow citizens.

Councilman Victor Boyd, a former shipmate of Foley’s, shared heartfelt memories of their friendship in the Navy, recalling Foley’s infectious smile and passion for music, particularly the songs of Lionel Richie and the Commodores. Boyd emphasized the significance of remembering the “Iowa 47” and the need to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten.

As the 35th anniversary of the USS Iowa explosion approached, Boyd sought to commemorate Foley’s memory in a special way, leading to the proclamation issued by Mayor Wansley. The declaration of “Tyrone Dwayne Foley Day” serves as a lasting tribute to a beloved member of the community whose legacy continues to inspire others to embody courage, integrity, and selflessness in their own lives.
