Clackmannanshire, Scotland – In a tragic case that shocked the community, a judge has ruled that a 77-year-old man with severe dementia killed his wife of 50 years in a violent attack at their home in Fishcross last year. John Pryde was declared unfit to stand trial for the murder of his wife Catherine, who was found bloodstained on the kitchen floor. The ruling came after an examination of facts hearing at the High Court in Dundee, where it was determined that Mr. Pryde would be detained at the State Hospital in Carstairs.
Mrs. Pryde, 74, sustained fatal injuries, including blunt force trauma to her head, chest, and neck, as well as numerous fractures. Despite the severity of her injuries, the judge noted that the attack was “wholly out of character” for Mr. Pryde, emphasizing that the couple had a loving and fulfilling relationship. Tragically, Mrs. Pryde passed away just a week before their golden wedding anniversary.
The court heard that blood was found in various rooms throughout the couple’s home, indicating a violent struggle. Mr. Pryde, who had been diagnosed with dementia the year prior, was found disoriented by a neighbor who discovered his wife’s body. During police questioning, Mr. Pryde showed no recollection of the events surrounding his wife’s death, further highlighting the devastating impact of his condition.
Psychiatrist Dr. Prathima Apurva stated that Mr. Pryde was unable to comprehend the nature of his actions due to his cognitive impairment, ultimately leading to a lack of criminal responsibility. Prosecutor Mark Mohammed KC described the case as “very tragic,” pointing out that Mr. Pryde’s actions were driven by his deteriorating cognitive abilities. The examination of facts hearing provided an opportunity for the Crown and the defense to present evidence to the court in the absence of a jury, shedding light on the complexities of the case.
