Rocky River, Ohio — A traumatic incident has raised alarm within the local running community after a woman reported being attacked during a lengthy run at Rocky River Reservation. The 24-year-old survivor is currently recovering while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
During her harrowing 911 call, the woman disclosed that she had been on a 20-mile run when she was suddenly assaulted from behind. In a state of panic, she told dispatchers, “I was just strangled,” and expressed her fear for her safety, pleading for immediate assistance. The audio revealed her desperate condition as she called for help while dealing with disorientation and bodily injuries.
The victim recounted being knocked unconscious and indicated that her assailant wore a black hoodie. After regaining consciousness, she described a distressing scene where blood covered her phone, making it difficult to use for help. Her calls to 911 painted a stark picture of brutality, with her injuries including a bloodied face.
As the investigation unfolds, the Metroparks Police have yet to identify a suspect, but community members are mobilizing in response to the attack. The violent event has sent shockwaves throughout Cleveland’s running circles, particularly among those close to the victim. Ryan Martin-Yates, a friend and fellow runner, expressed his horror at the attack, calling it a nightmare that runners hope never materializes.
In the wake of this serious incident, Martin-Yates and members of the Good Work Gang, a local running group, are acting to enhance safety measures for all runners in the area. They have implemented a buddy system, encouraging runners to pair up for safety. Martin-Yates emphasized the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis, stating that this approach is a proactive way to ensure no one runs alone.
The group plans to coordinate run meetups via social media, establishing scheduled times for both morning and sunset runs. Meeting at the iconic “Cleveland” sign in Tremont, they aim to create a supportive environment that not only keeps participants safe but also fosters a sense of camaraderie among runners.
As the community rallies together in response to this unsettling attack, the collective determination is clear: to create a communal framework that prioritizes safety while allowing residents to continue enjoying their passion for running.
