Robbery Suspect Arrested for Attack on Woman Walking to Sunday Mass in Queens

Queens, New York – A teenager has been charged in connection with a violent attack and robbery of a woman on her way to Sunday Mass in Queens. The incident, captured on security camera video, shocked the community and left the 68-year-old victim, identified as Irene Tahliambouris, hospitalized with serious injuries.

Security footage shows the victim just steps away from the front door of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Briarwood when the suspect, who had been following her, violently threw her from the top step. Tahliambouris landed on her back, hitting her head on the concrete sidewalk, before the attacker rifled through her pockets, stole her purse, and then fled in her car.

Following the harrowing incident, detectives were able to locate and apprehend a 16-year-old suspect, charging him with assault, robbery, grand larceny, and possession of stolen property. Due to his age, the identity of the perpetrator has not been disclosed.

In light of the attack, the community has rallied around Tahliambouris, with parishioners from St. Demetrios providing support and assistance. The victim, who suffered a skull fracture and a black eye, remains in the hospital fighting for her life, but there are hopeful signs of recovery. Reverend Konstantinos Kalogridis described the victim as a “sweet” and “humble” individual, emphasizing the miraculous nature of her survival.

In a statement, Tahliambouris’s family decried the violence and called for justice, expressing gratitude for the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring the suspect to account. They also raised concerns about criminal recidivism and urged authorities to prioritize the safety of the community.

The attack has drawn attention to the importance of public safety and the need for vigilant enforcement of the law to protect individuals like Tahliambouris from harm. As the investigation continues, the community is united in support of the victim and in seeking justice for the traumatic incident that unfolded outside the church in Queens.
