Robberies Shock Toronto: 12-Year-Old and 20-Year-Old Arrested in Connection with Deadly Attack on Vulnerable Victim

Toronto, Canada — A tragic series of violent incidents in downtown Toronto has led to the arrests of a 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man, both connected to a robbery spree and an unprovoked attack that resulted in the death of a 62-year-old man. The events unfolded on the morning of August 31, when the victims, predominantly unhoused individuals, were targeted.

According to Toronto police, the first assault occurred around 5:45 a.m. near Yonge and Dundas streets, where the suspects approached a man without shelter and violently attacked him. Fortunately, the victim managed to escape and seek medical assistance. Shortly thereafter, the suspects continued their spree, assaulting another unhoused individual shortly before 6 a.m.

The final assault that would lead to grave consequences took place later that morning when the two suspects targeted a man who was sleeping on a bench at Queen Street West and Bay Street. Armed with a hammer, they struck the victim before fleeing the scene. Although he was transported to the hospital for critical injuries, he tragically succumbed to his wounds days later.

Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe described the incidents as extremely violent and particularly alarming due to their targeting of the most vulnerable members of society. She noted that the attacks were not isolated events but a disturbing sequence of violence occurring within a span of a few hours that morning.

The investigation revealed that after the fatal assault, the pair attempted to rob an elderly man by asking to use his phone. When he refused, they forcefully took it from him, pushing him to the ground in the process. The suspects continued their aggression with another attempted robbery around 8 a.m., where they confronted a man, ultimately striking him when he did not comply with their demands.

Both suspects were arrested shortly after these late-morning assaults. They face multiple charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and two counts of assault with a weapon.

Police have urged community members who may have witnessed any of the incidents or who have additional information to come forward as they seek to piece together the broader context of the attacks. With a visible increase in violence, community leaders emphasize the need for enhanced safety measures and support for vulnerable populations in the area.

As investigations continue, the shocking nature of these events has left the community grappling with concerns about public safety and the treatment of those most at risk. In a city that prides itself on its diversity and inclusivity, these violent episodes serve as a painful reminder of the challenges still to be addressed.
