TYLER, Texas — A tragic road rage incident resulted in the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man at an intersection on Friday, raising concerns about escalating violence on the roads. Authorities reported that the altercation occurred around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Grande Boulevard and Paluxy Drive.
Police identified the shooter as Dayton Alexander Morgan, 23, who allegedly fired two shots from his vehicle, striking Trevor Julian. Witnesses described a tense confrontation that began when both vehicles halted at a red light. Allegedly, Julian’s white Tesla stopped suddenly, prompting Morgan to brake sharply and come to a stop closer to Julian’s car than intended.
An affidavit details that Julian exited the passenger side of the Tesla, while Morgan remained seated in his truck. The two men exchanged heated words, with Julian demanding Morgan to back up and Morgan urging him to move along. Tensions escalated further when Julian approached Morgan’s truck, shouting through the windshield and gesturing with his left hand.
In a sudden turn of events, Morgan retrieved a pistol from his vehicle’s center console as Julian approached the driver’s side. According to the affidavit, he fired a shot through the window, striking Julian in the throat. The confrontation took a deadly turn as Morgan shot again, this time hitting Julian in the upper left chest.
Julian collapsed at the scene, where he remained until emergency services arrived. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The affidavit indicated that Morgan claimed Julian made no explicit threats and did not appear to possess any weapons at the time of the altercation.
Investigation findings revealed blood evidence outside Morgan’s truck and bullet holes in the driver’s door, indicating that Julian had been outside the vehicle when the shots were fired. A woman and three children were present in Julian’s car, while another individual was with Morgan.
Morgan has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently detained at the Smith County Jail, with a bond set at $1 million. The incident highlights a growing issue of road rage that can lead to life-threatening consequences, sparking debates on awareness and prevention through educational initiatives and community engagement.
