Witnesses and neighborhood surveillance captured parts of the confrontation before an 18-year-old woman was arrested and later charged.
MILWAUKEE — Surveillance video, witness accounts and evidence from a south-side intersection are helping investigators piece together a road-rage encounter that ended with 44-year-old Minerva Hernandez-Lopez fatally shot and an 18-year-old Milwaukee woman facing criminal charges.
The Aug. 17 shooting near South 10th Street and West Lapham Boulevard unfolded shortly after 3:15 p.m., when traffic and neighborhood activity were still underway. Police described the shooting as the result of road rage. What led the two drivers into the confrontation has not been fully explained publicly, leaving investigators to reconstruct the sequence from video, witnesses and physical evidence.
A nearby security camera captured portions of the encounter. Local television reporters who reviewed the footage said two vehicles turned onto Lapham Boulevard from South 10th Street, with Hernandez-Lopez’s vehicle ahead of the other car. Her vehicle stopped and slowly backed up before moving away again.
Gunfire was then heard outside the camera’s view. The vehicles appeared again moments later, according to reports describing the recording. The second vehicle left the area while Hernandez-Lopez’s vehicle stopped. Another station that reviewed neighborhood footage reported that the vehicles had been following one another and made U-turns during the encounter.
Witness Jesus Ferreira said he was nearby when he heard several gunshots. He went toward the scene and joined others who tried to help Hernandez-Lopez. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified her as the 44-year-old victim who died at the scene.
Police located the other vehicle and arrested an 18-year-old woman after the shooting. The case was referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, and a charging report published Saturday said the Milwaukee woman had since been charged in connection with Hernandez-Lopez’s death. The accusation will now be tested through the court process, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The video has offered investigators a partial record, but it does not publicly answer several important questions. Authorities have not released a complete account of how the dispute began, how long the drivers had been following or confronting one another, or what immediately preceded the gunfire.
Hernandez-Lopez’s family returned to the area after her death, and flowers and balloons were placed near the intersection. Reports from Mexico said she was originally from Coscomatepec in Veracruz, and people close to the family began collecting money to support relatives after the killing.
The shooting also left witnesses confronting the aftermath of violence in an ordinary neighborhood setting. Ferreira told reporters that the experience was traumatic and urged people not to allow road disputes to escalate. His comments reflected the shock surrounding a confrontation that began between motorists and ended with a death in broad daylight.
Investigators have continued reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the criminal case moves forward. The surveillance footage establishes parts of the vehicles’ movements, but prosecutors and police have not publicly released a complete reconstruction of the encounter.
The new charges shift the case into the court system while unanswered questions remain about the moments before the shooting. Hernandez-Lopez’s family continues to mourn her death as prosecutors prepare to pursue the case against the accused 18-year-old woman.
