Recalled: Onewheel Electric Skateboards Linked to 4 Deaths and Numerous Injuries

PORTLAND, Oregon – All Onewheel electric skateboards are being recalled following reports of four deaths and multiple serious injuries. The company announced the recall after receiving numerous reports of riders being injured or killed while using the popular electric skateboard.

The skateboards, which are manufactured by Future Motion Inc., have been the subject of increasing safety concerns. The Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that the skateboard’s lithium-ion battery can be defective, leading to smoke and fire. The company has received more than 70 reports of the battery packs smoking or sparking, and at least 3 reports of burn injuries.

The recall affects around 11,000 Onewheel skateboards sold between February 2019 and March 2020. The skateboards were sold online and in stores across the country, priced at around $1800. Owners have been advised to immediately stop using the product and contact the company for a refund or repair.

Future Motion Inc. acknowledged the issue and expressed their commitment to ensuring the safety of their customers. The company is working closely with the CPSC to address the safety concerns and protect consumers from the potential risks associated with the skateboard. The company is also providing free repair services for the affected skateboards.

In the wake of the recall, safety advocates are urging consumers to be cautious when using electric skateboards and to stay updated on product recalls and safety warnings. It is essential for users to prioritize safety while choosing and using any recreational or transportation equipment, and to report any safety issues they encounter to the appropriate authorities.
