Dehradun, India — A tragic incident has highlighted racial tensions in India, following the death of a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura after a violent encounter that has raised concerns about discrimination against northeastern communities. Anjel Chakma died on December 24 after being attacked on December 9 while he and his younger brother, Michael, were confronted with derogatory remarks related to their ethnicity.
The brothers were out shopping for groceries in Selakui when a group of intoxicated individuals began to hurl insults at them. Witnesses reported that the group used offensive terms, including slurs commonly associated with people from the northeastern states, escalating from verbal abuse to physical violence when the brothers defended themselves.
In the altercation, Anjel was brutally stabbed multiple times, suffering significant injuries to his neck and stomach. His brother Michael was also assaulted, receiving a blow to the head with a metal object. The attackers threatened both students before fleeing the scene. Anjel was taken to Graphic Era Hospital, where he underwent treatment in the intensive care unit, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Anjel’s father, a head constable with the Border Security Force stationed in the Northeast, has since returned to Tripura with his son’s body to conduct the final rites. The incident has sparked outrage among students and community members who feel that incidents of racial discrimination against individuals from the northeastern states persist across India.
In response to the attack, local law enforcement formed a special team under the direction of the Senior Superintendent of Police in Dehradun to investigate the crime. Authorities worked quickly, using their networks to locate and apprehend five suspects believed to be involved in the attack. Their identities have been confirmed as residents of the region, with some reportedly having ties to influential families.
One suspect, a Nepali national, managed to escape authorities before he could be detained. Following the incident, Michael expressed his fears for his safety, indicating that the suspects had previously threatened them and were well-connected in the community.
The death of Anjel Chakma resonates deeply across the northeastern states of India, where there is ongoing concern about the treatment of students studying in other parts of the country. Activists are calling for greater awareness and tougher measures against racial violence. In light of their investigation, police have escalated charges against the individuals arrested, now including murder as part of their crimes.
This incident not only underscores the dangers of racial prejudice in India but also raises awareness about the broader societal issues impacting the northeastern community, sparking profound grief and anger among peers and advocates for equality. As investigations continue, the focus remains on seeking justice for Anjel and addressing the underlying issues that contribute to such heinous acts of violence.
