PHILADELPHIA — An 11-month-old puppy named Stella is in recovery following a serious attack by an unleashed pit bull in Center City. The incident, which left Stella with significant injuries, has spurred community concern and dialogue about dog safety regulations in the city.
On the day of the attack, Stella’s owner, J. Bazzel, was walking her near the Wanamaker Building, located at the intersection of Chestnut and Juniper streets. According to reports, the pit bull, allegedly owned by a person experiencing homelessness, lunged at the puppy, causing multiple fractures in her front left leg.
Dr. Erik Zager, an emergency veterinarian at the Philadelphia Animal Specialty and Emergency facility, treated Stella. While the injuries were not deemed life-threatening, Dr. Zager stressed that the situation could have resulted in a far more serious outcome if the bite had occurred in a different area. Stella has since undergone surgery and is now recuperating in a cast.
Following Bazzel’s post on social media detailing the attack, numerous residents shared similar experiences with the same dog, illuminating a pattern of dangerous encounters in the area. This has raised alarms about the enforcement of local leash laws, which mandate that dogs be leashed at a maximum length of six feet in public spaces. Dr. Zager underscored the importance of adhering to these regulations to prevent future attacks.
In response to the mounting veterinary bills, which have totaled approximately $9,000, Bazzel initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the expenses. The campaign has garnered significant attention, highlighting the community’s willingness to support pet safety initiatives.
The Philadelphia Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. Local authorities encourage anyone with information related to the unleashed dog to come forward as part of their ongoing inquiry.
