Pub-goer violently shoves woman down stairs, receives suspended sentence for attack

Neath, Wales – A violent incident unfolded at the Castle Hotel bar in Neath town center, Wales, when Tina Jones, 64, pushed a fellow pub-goer down a flight of stairs, resulting in a broken arm for the victim. Jones then proceeded to yell at the injured woman before leaving the scene to purchase a takeaway. The violent shove led to the victim needing plates and screws inserted into her arm, leaving her with lasting mobility issues. As a result of her actions, Jones received a 12-month suspended prison sentence after admitting to causing grievous bodily harm.

During the court proceedings at Swansea Crown Court, Prosecutor Brian Simpson recounted the events of the evening of December 9, revealing that Jones and the victim, who were acquainted, encountered each other at the bar. An altercation ensued when Jones forcefully pushed the victim down a flight of stairs after an initial encounter near the restrooms. Following the incident, Jones continued to shout at the injured woman before returning to the bar.

The victim suffered a broken humerus and radius in her left arm, necessitating surgical intervention and a week-long hospital stay. Despite the passage of four months, she continued to experience significant pain, making everyday activities challenging. Jones, who confessed to pushing the woman in a fit of rage, acknowledged her actions and expressed regret for the harm caused to the victim.

Jones, who has a history of violent offenses, received the suspended sentence with the requirement to undergo mental health treatment, participate in a rehabilitation program, and complete 100 hours of unpaid community work. Additionally, she was ordered to pay the victim £500 in compensation. Jones’ defense attorney, Dean Pulling, explained that the incident stemmed from existing tensions between the two women, emphasizing that it was an explanation rather than an excuse for Jones’ behavior.

The judge in the case, Recorder Greg Bull KC, noted that Jones had acted recklessly under the influence of alcohol and emphasized the importance of her receiving appropriate help to address her issues. Despite expressing doubts about Jones’ level of remorse, the judge decided that a suspended sentence would be in the best interest of society. Jones was instructed to reduce her alcohol consumption to find the means to compensate the victim.
