The victim’s parents found him after hearing screams from a basement apartment, police said.
MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — Nassau County police said a 28-year-old man died Monday after a woman he knew stabbed him in the neck inside a Massapequa home near the local high school.
The suspect, 22-year-old Kristin Scully of Massapequa, was arrested and is being charged with second-degree murder, police said. Investigators said Scully and the victim were acquaintances who met at a bar before returning to the house where the man lived with his parents.
Police said the attack happened at about 1:30 a.m. in a basement apartment. Detective Lieutenant George Darienzo said Scully stabbed the man while he slept after becoming angry. The victim’s parents went downstairs after hearing screams. Darienzo said the man died in his father’s arms as his family tried to help him.
Officers later found Scully hiding in the house, police said. A pocketknife was recovered from her. Officials have not publicly confirmed the victim’s identity, and they have not said whether there were other witnesses inside the basement apartment before the stabbing. The precise motive remained under investigation.
The killing unsettled the neighborhood, where residents described a large emergency response before sunrise. Police closed the street for hours while helicopters circled and K-9 units searched the area. Neighbors said the victim was familiar to many people nearby and that the violence was unusual for the block.
The criminal case now moves to court, where Scully is expected to face the murder charge filed after her arrest. Detectives are still reviewing the timeline, the knife recovered at the scene and statements from people connected to the home. Prosecutors may release more details as the case proceeds.
As of Tuesday, police had not released the victim’s name and had not announced any additional arrests in the Massapequa homicide investigation.
