HIALEAH, FL – A newly released video offers a deeper insight into a 2022 domestic shooting incident in Hialeah involving two police officers. The footage shows Damion Colon, an officer with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, being shot by his estranged girlfriend, Yesenia Sanchez, a former Miami-Dade schools police officer. The dramatic video captures the argument escalating to violence as Sanchez draws a gun and shoots Colon at close range.
Sanchez, 32, was taken into custody shortly after the incident, which occurred in November 2022. The couple had a tumultuous seven-year relationship, marked by previous incidents of domestic disputes. In a newly released police body camera video, Sanchez is seen handcuffed and being led into a squad car following her arrest at home. She had fled the scene and crashed her vehicle while attempting to escape.
Authorities revealed that Sanchez used a GPS tracker to locate Colon, who was off duty and parked near his family home in Hialeah. After the shooting, Colon was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Despite the severity of his injuries, Colon survived, though he has faced a lengthy recovery process involving multiple surgeries and ongoing therapy.
This incident was not the first time Sanchez had been in trouble with the law due to domestic issues. The previous year, she was arrested on a domestic violence charge stemming from an argument over child care. Following that arrest, Sanchez resigned from her position as a school police officer.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Sanchez confessed to the crime and was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated stalking, and leaving the scene of an accident. She is currently being held in jail without bond as the legal proceedings continue.
Colon remains on a challenging path to recovery, dealing with the physical and emotional aftermath of the attack. The incident has highlighted the complexities and dangers of domestic violence, even among those sworn to uphold the law.
The case has drawn attention to the need for better support systems for law enforcement officers dealing with personal issues, as well as the importance of addressing domestic violence comprehensively.
As the investigation proceeds, the community watches closely, hoping for justice and healing for all involved.
