Police: Coworker Ran Over Woman With Moving Truck in Houston

Houston police said a woman was killed at an apartment complex on South Gessner Road.

HOUSTON, Texas — A woman working on a moving crew was killed Thursday after police said a coworker intentionally struck her with a box truck during a dispute at a west Houston apartment complex.

The crash happened about 3:30 p.m. at 2401 South Gessner Road. Houston police said the woman was 31 years old. Her identity was still pending notification of relatives Friday by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Lt. Larry Crowson said officers responded to the apartment complex and found the woman dead. Police said the crew had been helping a resident move when two members of the crew began arguing. Investigators said the man and woman involved in the argument were in a dating relationship.

According to police, the man got into a box truck, struck the woman and left the scene. A third person who had been working with the crew stayed behind and gave information to officers. Investigators later reviewed surveillance video that police said showed the truck hitting the woman.

Officers later found the truck and took Keith Bembry Sims, 33, into custody without incident. Police said homicide detectives A. Herrera and L. Brooks handled the investigation and met with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office before charges were accepted.

Sims faces charges of manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid in an accident resulting in death. The charges were filed in separate Harris County criminal district courts. Police have not released a detailed account of what started the argument or whether any weapon other than the truck was involved.

The death brought homicide investigators to a busy stretch of South Gessner Road, where apartment complexes, businesses and traffic sit close together. Police said the scene was secured while officers gathered witness accounts, reviewed video and tracked the truck connected to the crash.

The investigation was ongoing Friday, with the victim’s name still withheld and court proceedings for Sims expected to determine the next public steps in the case.
