Overdose Surge: 70+ Overdoses, Multiple Deaths in Austin; 2 Detained

Austin, Texas – Following a surge of overdoses resulting in multiple deaths, two individuals suspected of involvement have been detained, according to Austin-Travis County EMS. The agency has responded to approximately 70 suspected overdoses as of Wednesday, with the possibility of more cases emerging throughout the week.

Amidst concerns over a potential deadly batch of illicit narcotics in the community, ATCEMS reported responding to 37 overdoses on Monday, 27 on Tuesday, and seven on Wednesday. While the agency confirmed that eight deaths were suspected to be related to opioids, the exact nature of the overdoses remains under investigation.

In response to the spike in overdoses, various organizations, including EMS, the homeless strategy office, urban alchemy, and nonprofits such as Texas Harm Reduction Alliance, mobilized to distribute Narcan, a medication used to counteract opioid overdoses. ATCEMS reported distributing over 400 doses of Narcan in an effort to combat the outbreak of overdoses.

Acknowledging the impact of Narcan distribution efforts, ATCEMS spokesperson Captain Christa Stedman noted a significant decline in overdose numbers within a few days. The community health paramedic team and partner organizations were credited for their swift response in providing Narcan to individuals in need.

Texas Harm Reduction Alliance also played a crucial role in the response, distributing more than 100 doses of Narcan to address the overdose crisis. Lily Hughes, with the alliance, highlighted the importance of educating individuals on the risks of overdose and ensuring that everyone encountered was informed about the current situation.

The majority of overdose calls were initially concentrated in downtown Austin before spreading to other parts of the city. City EMS Captain Christa Stedman emphasized the likelihood of a new batch of drugs circulating in the area based on the similar symptoms observed in overdose cases.

As the investigation unfolds, APD’s Narcotics Support Unit is actively pursuing leads to locate and apprehend individuals involved in the distribution of illicit drugs linked to the overdoses. While details about the suspects remain undisclosed, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests in connection with the incident.
