New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a significant arrest in connection to the violent attack on the Indian High Commission in London last year. The suspect, identified as Inderpal Singh Gaba, a resident of Hounslow in the United Kingdom, was apprehended upon arrival in Delhi based on a lookout circular issued against him.
This arrest marks a milestone as it is the first time the NIA has detained a British resident for a crime that occurred under the UK’s jurisdiction. The move signifies a step towards enhanced coordination between law enforcement agencies of both countries, serving as a warning to deter similar security breaches, disrespect to the Indian flag, or threats to Indian interests abroad.
Investigations by the NIA have uncovered that the attacks in London on March 19 and 22, 2023, were part of a larger conspiracy to launch violent assaults on Indian missions and officials. These attacks were believed to be carried out in retaliation to actions taken by Punjab Police against pro-Khalistan separatist Amritpal Singh, who was arrested in March of the previous year.
Last August, the NIA conducted raids at 31 locations in Punjab and Haryana to expose the full extent of the conspiracy behind the March attack. Additionally, a visit to the UK was made by an NIA team in May 2023 to investigate the incident further. The agency also employed crowdsourcing tactics to gather information on UK-based entities and individuals involved in the attack, leading to the identification of several of the attackers.
Efforts to apprehend the culprits, their associates, and supporters, both in India and abroad, have been rigorous. Several lookout circulars were issued, and a manhunt was launched to bring those responsible to justice. Digital data containing pertinent information on the accused persons implicated in the attack was seized during the raids, aiding in the progression of the investigation.
