Nevada Mom Sentenced to Life After Drowning Two Children

The plea agreement spared Jovan Trevino from a possible death penalty trial.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A former Henderson woman will spend the rest of her life in prison after pleading guilty to drowning her 4-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter in 2021.

Jovan Trevino, 38, received life without parole Tuesday in Clark County District Court. The sentence came after she admitted killing Christopher Fox and Gihanna Fox, closing a case that brought years of court hearings and grief for the children’s family.

The children were found dead July 19, 2021, inside a Henderson home. Investigators said each child had been drowned in a bathtub. Trevino was later taken into custody in Bullhead City, Arizona, and returned to Nevada to face murder charges. She pleaded guilty earlier this year to two counts of first-degree murder.

In court, Trevino apologized and said she was not in her right mind when the killings happened. District Judge Carli Kierny rejected any softening of the crime’s impact as she imposed the agreed sentence. Kierny said Trevino would spend her life thinking about the children she killed.

Prosecutors described the case as a severe act of violence by a parent against her own children. Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney John Giordani said the crime stood apart even among murder cases. The plea agreement removed the possibility of a death penalty trial but guaranteed Trevino would never be released from prison.

Family members used the sentencing hearing to focus on Christopher and Gihanna. Their father, Christopher Fox, said he wanted the court to remember the children as loving and happy. Their grandmother, Shawna Fox, spoke about the pain of how the children were found and the damage left behind for the family.

Trevino was led from the courtroom after the sentence. With the judgment entered, the criminal case has reached its final trial court milestone unless later appeals or post-conviction filings are made.
