The victim died at the scene after officers were called to Getaway Sports Bar before sunrise.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are investigating after a man was fatally shot Wednesday morning at Getaway Sports Bar in Parkway Village, a southeast Memphis neighborhood near Winchester Road and South Perkins Road.
Officers were sent to the bar shortly after 5:50 a.m. and found a man with a gunshot wound. Police said he died at the scene. Investigators had not released his identity, named a suspect or said what sparked the shooting.
The shooting was reported at 4632 Winchester Road, where the sports bar sits near a busy intersection lined with businesses and traffic routes. Police did not say whether the man was shot in the parking lot, inside the bar or somewhere else on the property. Officials also had not said whether the victim was a customer, employee or passerby.
Police released few details in the first hours after the killing. They confirmed the response time, the location and the victim’s death, but did not announce any arrests. Investigators typically work to secure video, interview witnesses and review physical evidence before releasing more information in a homicide case.
The early morning killing added police activity to a commercial corridor that serves Parkway Village and nearby southeast Memphis areas. Winchester Road is one of the main east-west routes through the area, while South Perkins Road links neighborhoods and businesses north and south of the intersection.
As of Thursday, the case remained open. Police had not released a suspect description, a possible motive or the victim’s name. Any future court action would depend on whether investigators identify and arrest a suspect.
The investigation remained in its early stage Thursday, with police still working to determine who fired the shot and what happened before officers arrived.
