Naga Organization in Manipur Condemns Barbaric Attack on Villagers by Kukis

Kangpokpi, Manipur – The Naga organization in Manipur has issued a strong statement, expressing their discontent and determination to not stand idly by in the face of ongoing tensions between two tribal communities in the Kangpokpi district. The conflict arose from a land dispute which escalated into violence, resulting in the assault of at least 10 individuals, including two village leaders, from the Naga community.

The United Naga Council (UNC), All Naga Students Association (ANSAM), and Naga Women Union (NWU) jointly condemned the “barbaric act” carried out by individuals identified as Kukis. The assault on the Naga villagers of Konsakhul near Leimakhong Army Cantonment on April 5, 2025, left numerous individuals severely injured and properties destroyed. The incident was described as a premeditated attack by assailants from Leilon Kukis, causing significant harm to the peaceful Liangmai Naga villagers.

According to Naga customary law, any attack on the chief or village authority is considered a grave offense and a direct assault on the entire community. The Naga organizations expressed shock and dismay over the organized crime committed during a public curfew, questioning the role of government authorities and security forces in addressing the situation.

The Naga groups also denounced the actions of the Kuki volunteers from Valpabung village, who engaged in vandalism and arson attacks in Kazanga, a village belonging to the Maram Naga tribe. These acts were viewed as attempts at land appropriation under the guise of dispute, prompting strong condemnation from the Naga community.

In response to the escalating tensions and violence, the Naga organizations emphasized that they would not remain silent spectators to such aggression. They called for sanity and good sense to prevail in order to prevent further escalation of conflicts and to seek amicable resolutions to the disputes at hand. The situation remains tense as both communities grapple with the aftermath of the recent violence, highlighting the need for swift and effective intervention to restore peace and harmony in the region.
