Santa Ana, California – A California company based in Santa Ana has issued a recall of its mushroom-infused chocolate and sweets due to the presence of a chemical not approved by the FDA for consumption. The recall of Prophet Premium Blends Diamond Shruumz products comes after reports of illnesses linked to the consumption of the products in over 20 states across the country, with two potentially associated deaths reported by the FDA.
The company, Prophet Premium Blends, prioritizes the health and safety of its consumers and has ceased the production and distribution of all Diamond Shruumz products. The recall was prompted by incidents of consumers falling ill after consuming the products, which were found to contain higher levels of Muscimol than deemed safe.
Muscimol, a compound found in mushrooms of the genus Amanita, can have toxic effects on individuals when consumed at high doses. The FDA investigation into the outbreak of illnesses revealed that symptoms reported by affected consumers included seizures, agitation, muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, confusion, nausea, abnormal heart rates, and other serious effects.
The recall, initiated on June 27, included all flavors of Diamond Shruumz products such as Infused Cones, Microdosing Chocolate Bars, and Gummies. The products were sold online and in various retail locations across the country, including smoke and vape shops, and stores that sell hemp-derived products.
Consumers who have purchased Diamond Shruumz products are urged to stop using them immediately. The company has instructed retailers and wholesalers to discontinue the products, quarantine them, and arrange for returns and refunds. Customers with questions can contact the company directly for assistance.
As of July 23, the FDA reported 74 illnesses in 28 states, with the majority of affected individuals seeking medical care and some requiring hospitalization. The agency is investigating two potentially associated deaths in connection with the recalled products. The presence of Muscimol in the mushroom-infused goods has raised concerns about the lack of regulation in the supplements industry.
Recent research has highlighted the growing interest in psilocybin-containing mushrooms in the U.S., with concerns about the toxicity and potential harm of compounds like Muscimol. The recall serves as a reminder of the importance of FDA approval and oversight in ensuring the safety of consumer products.
