WICHITA, Kan. — An 80-year-old woman is facing murder charges in connection with a three-vehicle crash that resulted in the deaths of two people over the weekend. Clowie McLaughlin was booked on Saturday night at the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of second-degree reckless but unintentional murder.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Central and Webb. Police report that McLaughlin was driving a black truck when it collided with a white car and a gray Jeep traveling in the opposite direction. Tragically, the occupants of the white car—42-year-old Lashea Bell and her daughter, 25-year-old A’Niah Bell—were killed in the impact.
Authorities indicated that both speed and alcohol may have played a role in the incident. Following the crash, McLaughlin was transported to a local hospital for injuries before being taken into custody. The driver of the Jeep sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
Witnesses have expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the dangers associated with speeding in urban areas where families often gather. “It’s heartbreaking,” said one bystander who witnessed the aftermath of the accident. “You never expect something like this to happen in your neighborhood.”
Police are continuing their investigation into the accident, exploring all potential factors that may have contributed to this tragic outcome. Community members are mourning the loss of the Bell family, with friends describing them as loving and dedicated to their children.
As the case develops, it raises broader questions about road safety, particularly for elderly drivers. Local officials have been urged to consider more stringent measures to ensure the safety of all road users.
McLaughlin remains in custody, and a court date is expected to be scheduled soon as the legal proceedings advance.
