Miscreants Face Justice: Lagos Mobile Courts Remand Six After Violent Attack on Traffic Officials

LAGOS, Nigeria — Six individuals are facing legal consequences following a violent confrontation with officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) during a late-night enforcement operation. The incident occurred on Airport Road, where law enforcement aimed to address ongoing issues linked to illegal activities affecting public safety.

A statement released by LASTMA on Wednesday detailed that seven people were charged during an arraignment on Tuesday at a Lagos State Mobile Court. They are accused of violent conduct and obstructing the duties of government officials during the operation conducted on December 23. While one suspect pleaded not guilty and was granted bail, the remaining six were ordered to remain in custody as the case was postponed until February 19, 2026, for further proceedings.

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, led the enforcement effort, which was supported by a coalition of security personnel, including the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) Corps and the Lagos State Task Force. This joint operation was prompted by numerous complaints from the Nigerian Airport Authority regarding unlawful encroachments on its facilities by a mix of rogue commercial bus operators and criminal groups along the airport corridor.

According to LASTMA officials, the alleged activities of these miscreants have contributed to a notable public nuisance, which includes harassment and intimidation of unsuspecting individuals. The situation has reportedly escalated to such a degree that travelers and the general public have frequently fallen victim to theft and aggression in that area.

During the enforcement operation, tensions escalated sharply when five officers were reportedly attacked with weapons. One tow truck belonging to LASTMA was also set ablaze by the assailants, an act interpreted as an aggressive challenge to law enforcement efforts.

Despite facing violence, officials stated that the enforcement team acted professionally and showed remarkable restraint during the assault. The operation concluded with the impounding of 56 vehicles, which included 44 commercial buses, five private vehicles, and seven trucks, all confiscated for various traffic and environmental violations.

Following the enforcement effort, Bakare-Oki reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to safeguard public infrastructure and uphold safety regulations on the roads. He emphasized that intimidation tactics employed by criminal elements would not deter the state’s resolve. Authorities are prepared to respond to any acts of lawlessness with stringent legal measures to ensure the safety and orderliness of the metropolis.
