Police said both workers were treated and released after a morning shooting near Manchester and Union streets.
MANCHESTER, N.H. — A Manchester man was arrested Thursday after police said he fired one shot that injured two Department of Public Works employees walking near Manchester and Union streets.
Police identified the suspect as Sean Day, 32, of Manchester. He was charged with two counts of first-degree assault after officers found him at a city business several hours after the shooting. Officials said the injuries were not life-threatening and the workers were later recovering at home.
The shooting was reported at about 9:20 a.m. Thursday as the two city workers walked in the area of Manchester and Union streets. Police said a man known to one of the workers approached them, pulled out a handgun and fired a single round. That shot struck both men, police said. Investigators have not said what led to the encounter.
Manchester Police Chief Peter Marr said officers and detectives moved quickly to identify Day and take him into custody. Marr called the shooting “a shocking and brazen act of violence” and said the department’s thoughts were with the injured employees, their families and the city departments affected by the attack.
Police said the shooting did not appear to be random and that there was no known ongoing threat to the public after Day’s arrest. Union Street between Hanover and Manchester streets, and Londonderry Lane between Pine and Union streets, were closed while officers processed the scene. The roads reopened by Thursday afternoon.
Mayor Jay Ruais said he spoke with both injured workers and was grateful they were recovering. Ruais thanked police for what he called a swift response and also praised public works employees for their daily service to the city. Heather Hamel of Manchester police said the department used city resources, including ShotSpotter and cameras, during the response.
Day’s case remains under investigation. Police did not announce a motive or release the workers’ names. Officials had not released a court date as of the latest update.
