Investigators said the Westheimer Road scene was secured after a man was wounded and a woman was taken into custody.
HOUSTON, Texas — A shooting aboard a METRO bus in Houston’s River Oaks area involved two people who appeared to know each other, transit officials said, as police reported that the scene was secured and there was no continuing danger to the public.
The Houston Police Department said a man was wounded and a woman was arrested after a fight escalated Friday afternoon in the 3600 block of Westheimer Road. Police said a gun was produced during the confrontation and the two struggled over the weapon before the man was shot in a finger.
The man was taken to a hospital with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening. Authorities recovered the weapon and took the woman into custody. Neither person had been publicly identified as of Saturday.
METRO later said the man and woman appeared to be acquainted. Officials did not explain how they knew each other, and police had not released information about what caused the fight. The available information did not establish a motive for the confrontation.
Police said officers secured the scene after the shooting and determined there was no danger to the public. The incident remained under investigation, and authorities did not report injuries to other riders or disclose whether anyone else was directly involved in the altercation.
The bus remained stopped while officers conducted their investigation. Police have not released a detailed account of where the people were positioned inside the bus, how the weapon was introduced into the fight or who initially possessed it.
The shooting occurred along Westheimer Road, a major Houston corridor served by METRO bus service. The transit agency provides regular service along Westheimer, but officials had not publicly identified the specific bus route involved in Friday’s shooting.
Police had not announced charges against the woman as of the latest available update. Investigators also had not disclosed whether the case would be referred for specific criminal charges or whether additional evidence was still being reviewed.
The case remained under investigation Saturday. The man was expected to survive his injury, the gun had been recovered, and authorities had reported no continuing threat connected to the incident.
