A 15-year-old passenger died and a 16-year-old bicyclist was injured as both vehicles approached First Avenue, police said.
NEW YORK — Investigators are examining the movements of a commercial truck and a bicycle carrying two teenagers after the vehicles collided during a turn at East 14th Street and First Avenue, killing a 15-year-old girl and injuring the 16-year-old operating the bike.
The crash happened at about 9 p.m. Friday in Manhattan’s East Village. Police later identified the teenager who died as Daria Serkov, 15, of Manhattan. She and the 16-year-old girl were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where Serkov was pronounced dead. The surviving rider was listed in stable condition.
Police said a 57-year-old man was driving a commercial Peterbilt truck when the collision occurred. Updated accounts from authorities said the truck and bicycle were traveling along East 14th Street and turning onto First Avenue when they collided. The truck driver remained at the scene and was not reported injured.
The precise sequence of the turn remains a central part of the investigation. Authorities have not publicly released a completed collision reconstruction, a finding on which road user had the right of way or a final determination about what caused the crash.
A Citi Bike was found beneath the truck after the collision. Investigators examined the scene Friday night as emergency crews worked around the intersection. Police have not announced any charges against the driver.
Some of the first reports from the scene gave different information about the surviving teenager, including accounts that listed her as 13. Later police information cited by several New York news organizations described the bicycle operator as a 16-year-old girl and Serkov as the 15-year-old passenger.
The evolving details underscore the preliminary nature of information released in the hours after a fatal collision. Police have not publicly disclosed a complete timeline showing the positions of the truck and bicycle at each stage of the turn, and investigators are continuing to review evidence.
The NYPD Highway Patrol is handling the investigation. Serkov’s death has been confirmed, the 16-year-old rider was last reported in stable condition, and no arrest or final finding of responsibility had been announced Saturday.
