One man died and another was hospitalized after gunfire inside Red West Pizza.
LOS ANGELES — A man trying to break up a fight at a Wilmington pizza restaurant was shot and killed Saturday, and another man was wounded, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. at Red West Pizza on West Pacific Coast Highway. Police said two women were fighting inside the restaurant when a 26-year-old man stepped in. A male suspect then pulled out a gun and fired several rounds.
The 26-year-old victim died after being shot. Another man in his early to mid-20s was also hit and taken to a hospital. Officials said the second victim’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and his vital signs were stable.
The suspect left the restaurant on foot after the shooting, police said. CBS Los Angeles reported that one person was later seen being placed in handcuffs near the scene. Police had not publicly confirmed the person’s role or released the suspect’s name.
Investigators blocked off the restaurant and nearby area while they searched for evidence. The LAPD later told people to stay away from Pacific Coast Highway and Bay View Avenue because officers were still working at the scene.
Police have not said what started the fight between the two women. They also have not said whether the shooter was part of the argument before the 26-year-old man tried to intervene. The victims’ names were being withheld pending official identification and family notification.
The investigation was ongoing Monday. Detectives were expected to review witness statements, video from the area and physical evidence from the restaurant as they determine whether charges will be filed.
