9-Year-Old Girl Killed As Gunfire Rips Through Flint Home

A 9-year-old girl died and another girl was hospitalized after gunfire struck an Altoona Street home.

FLINT, Mich. — Flint police were searching Friday for whoever fired more than 100 shots into an Altoona Street home, killing a 9-year-old girl and critically injuring another girl before sunrise.

The shooting was reported at 2:07 a.m. in the 2500 block of Altoona Street. Flint police, firefighters and Genesee County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene. Officers found two girls with gunshot wounds. One was pronounced dead at the home, and the other was rushed to a local hospital.

Investigators found a large number of shell casings outside the home. Police said evidence markers appeared to stop at 99, but the actual number of shots was higher. The volume of gunfire became a central detail in the investigation as officers worked to determine where the shots came from and who was involved.

No suspect was known publicly by Friday evening. Police had not announced arrests, a motive or whether any intended target was inside the home. Officials also had not released the names of the girls. One local report described the injured girl as the victim’s sister, while authorities continued to withhold many details tied to the family.

Flint City Councilwoman Tonya Burns said she spoke with the family after the shooting and called the attack senseless. “This has to stop,” Burns said. She said the killing of a child inside a home showed how gun violence was reaching people who were not part of any dispute.

The shooting added another homicide investigation to a city where police and community leaders have repeatedly raised concern about gunfire in neighborhoods. In this case, the early morning attack left a family mourning one child while waiting for updates on another. Burns said the damage went far beyond the crime scene.

The next step is the police investigation. Detectives are seeking information from witnesses, neighbors and anyone who may know who was near the 2500 block of Altoona Street around 2 a.m. Friday. Tips can be given to Detective Perry or Crime Stoppers, including anonymous reports.

As of the latest update, the surviving girl remained in critical condition, and Flint police had not named a suspect in the shooting.
