Detectives canvassed Bromley Court after a local man was found mortally wounded inside a parked vehicle.
WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A fatal shooting brought police, crime-scene tape and investigators to a residential street Wednesday, surprising neighbors who described serious violence as unusual in their section of Winslow Township.
Police found 33-year-old Domincio Fuhrtz of Winslow Township with a gunshot wound inside a parked vehicle on the unit block of Bromley Court. Officers had been sent there at about 2:03 p.m. after receiving a report of a person shot.
Fuhrtz was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where authorities said he was pronounced dead at about 3:01 p.m. Detectives had not announced an arrest or released information about a possible suspect, motive or events leading to the shooting.
Residents watched as officers blocked part of the street, spoke with people in the area and examined the vehicle. Evidence markers could be seen near the passenger side of a black SUV, and investigators carried bags from the scene before a tow truck removed the vehicle later in the day.
Neighbor Phil Gaspara said his children had been playing basketball with friends when they reported hearing gunfire. He initially doubted that the sounds were shots because the neighborhood had not experienced similar incidents during the decade he had lived there.
Gaspara said the arrival of several police vehicles soon afterward made clear that something serious had happened. He described the neighborhood as a generally peaceful area and said he hoped the shooting was an isolated event.
Another resident, Keisha Howard, returned to find the street restricted by crime-scene tape. She said the shooting was concerning. Police went door to door as detectives sought information from residents who may have seen or heard something.
Investigators also appeared to be identifying home-surveillance systems in the neighborhood. Doorbell cameras and other exterior cameras could provide a record of vehicles or people moving through Bromley Court around the time of the shooting, though authorities have not said whether useful footage was recovered.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Winslow Township police are conducting the investigation. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact county Detective Luis Sibaja at 856-225-8682 or township Detective Rick Wells at 609-567-0700, extension 1224.
No arrests had been reported Thursday. Authorities had not said whether the public faced an ongoing threat or whether investigators believed Fuhrtz was specifically targeted.
