Police are trying to establish a timeline after the victim was discovered in a wooded northeast Indianapolis area early Wednesday.
INDIANAPOLIS — Homicide detectives are investigating after a man was found fatally shot near a wooded stretch of Fall Creek Road on Indianapolis’ northeast side early Wednesday, leaving police with unanswered questions about when and where the shooting occurred.
Officers were sent to the 6800 block of Fall Creek Road on Oct. 28 following a report of a person shot. They found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The location is in an area that includes trees and walking paths, creating one of the central questions for detectives: whether the man was shot at the place where he was discovered or arrived there afterward. Police had not publicly established how long he had been there before officers were called.
Investigators also had not announced a suspect, motive or arrest in the initial stages of the case. No account of the events leading to the shooting had been released, and authorities had not disclosed whether investigators were seeking a particular vehicle or person in connection with the death.
The investigation changed course after detectives reviewed evidence from the scene. Police initially considered the possibility that the man’s death was a suicide, but homicide detectives later determined that the evidence supported investigating the death as a homicide. Authorities have not specified what evidence prompted the change.
The man’s name was not immediately released. The Marion County Coroner’s Office is responsible for formally determining the cause and manner of death and for releasing the victim’s identity after appropriate family notification.
