Argument Explodes Into Deadly Shooting and Stabbing in Frankford

Residents expressed surprise after an argument between two men turned a residential property into the scene of a fatal police investigation.

PHILADELPHIA — Residents of a Frankford block were confronting the aftermath Thursday of a violent encounter at a neighborhood home that left one man dead from a gunshot and another hospitalized in critical condition with stab wounds.

The confrontation occurred Wednesday evening on the 5400 block of Harbison Avenue. Police responding about 5:30 p.m. found two wounded men at or near the front of a residence. One man had been shot in the chest, while the other had stab wounds to his arms and legs. The shooting victim later died at Temple University Hospital. Police said the second man was expected to survive.

Neighbors told local news organizations that the violence was startling for the block. Some residents noted that veterans live in the area and said they had not expected a deadly confrontation to occur there. Their comments came as police worked across the property, where investigators said evidence of the altercation was found both inside the home and outside near the front yard.

Police believe the two men knew each other, but authorities had not disclosed their relationship or said what caused their dispute. A witness told investigators that an argument was underway before a gunshot was heard. Police had not released a full account establishing which man fired the gun, which man used the knives or the exact order in which the injuries occurred.

Authorities recovered four weapons from the property: a handgun and three knives. NBC10 reported that a gun and a knife were recovered outside the residence while two other knives were found inside. The distribution of evidence across the property was consistent with investigators’ description of a confrontation that moved through more than one part of the scene.

The age of the man who died was reported differently in initial accounts. Multiple local reports, citing police, identified the resident as 62, while another report initially listed the shooting victim as 64. His identity had not been released Thursday morning. The other man was described as being in his 30s, and police had not publicly identified him either.

Authorities said they did not initially believe anyone beyond the two men was involved in the altercation. Police later said one male was in custody but did not identify him or clarify his status in the investigation. No charges had been announced, and investigators had not publicly assigned criminal responsibility for the fatal encounter.

For residents, the visible police response turned an otherwise familiar residential stretch into an active crime scene for several hours. The investigation remained open Thursday, with key questions unresolved about the relationship between the men, the reason for their argument and how the gun and knives recovered from the property figured into the confrontation.

Police had not announced additional arrests or released the names of either man as detectives continued reviewing evidence and witness information from the Harbison Avenue property.
