“Major Announcement Expected in Gilgo Beach Serial Killing Suspect Rex Heuermann’s Case” – New Connections to Las Vegas Cold Cases Explored

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Prosecutors in Long Island are preparing to make a significant announcement in the case of Rex Heuermann, the suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney is scheduled to make the announcement following a court hearing in Riverhead, New York.

Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect, was charged in July with the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, and has been the prime suspect in the death of a fourth victim. He has pleaded not guilty.

The arrest of Heuermann comes more than a decade after police searching for a missing woman discovered 10 sets of human remains concealed in the dense underbrush near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. His arrest has also prompted investigators in Las Vegas to re-examine cold cases that could be connected to the killings.

Darcy Spears, Chief Investigator, reported back in August that Las Vegas Metro police are re-evaluating the case of Victoria Camara, a young sex worker who was found dead near Boulder City in 2003. Camara’s cousin, Kaila Donaldson, mentioned that Camara had turned to prostitution after becoming a single teen mother and expressed hope that the renewed effort would lead to answers.

The expansion of the serial killer probe to Las Vegas has sparked renewed interest in cold cases and has given hope to families still searching for closure. Las Vegas Metro police have urged anyone with information on Camara’s case to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
