Machete Attack Survivor Recovers at Grady Hospital After Brutal Assault in Athens, GoFundMe Exceeds Goal

Athens, Georgia – A man critically injured in a vicious machete attack at a homeless center in Athens is now recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The victim, identified as 53-year-old Chris Sullens, was assaulted outside the Advantage Homeless Day Center, where he was employed. The incident, which took place on June 20, left Sullens with severe wounds to his head and face, resulting in him being airlifted to Grady for medical treatment.

Sullens’ sister, Teresa Sullens, shared on a GoFundMe page that her brother is gradually regaining his voice and has been heard saying words like “Hi,” “bye,” “water,” and “hungry.” The community rallied behind Sullens, surpassing the initial fundraising goal of $10,000 with donations exceeding $21,000 to assist with his medical expenses.

The suspect behind the attack has been identified as Cedric Courtes Smith, aged 33. Smith, with a prior criminal history including charges like battery and obstruction, is currently held in jail without bond, facing charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon in the commission of a crime. Notably, Smith had previously been convicted of an aggravated assault in 2017 for attacking a University of Georgia student with a razor blade.

Despite enduring extensive injuries, including skull damage and the possible loss of his left eye, Sullens underwent three major surgeries. His coworkers and a client acted swiftly to stabilize Sullens before medical help arrived, potentially saving his life. Smith’s parole from a previous conviction was revoked due to the new charges, indicating a pattern of violent behavior.

The community continues to show support for Sullens, emphasizing his dedication to serving the homeless population at the day center. The brutal attack has sparked outrage and concern, shedding light on the importance of addressing mental health and violence prevention within communities. As Sullens remains hospitalized, his loved ones express gratitude for the outpouring of support and financial assistance received through the fundraising efforts.
