Lithium-Ion E-Bike Battery Explosion Causes $150,000 in Damage to Park Ridge Home

PARK RIDGE, Illinois – The Park Ridge Fire Department responded to a call about smoke in a single-family home on Thursday morning. The incident turned out to be a suspected battery explosion in the basement of the residence. Upon arrival, the fire crews found dark black smoke emanating from the basement, prompting an upgrade to a confirmed fire response.

In addition to Park Ridge fire units, neighboring fire companies were summoned to the scene to assist in containing the fire. The Park Ridge crews were able to swiftly extinguish the fire in the basement, while other fire companies conducted a search of the home to ensure all occupants had evacuated and ventilated the structure.

Mutual aid was provided by fire companies from Des Plaines, Niles, and North Maine fire departments along with the Rosemont Public Safety Department. Aid crews from the Elk Grove, Schiller Park, and Wheeling fire departments also staffed the Park Ridge fire stations. Fire investigators determined that the fire originated in the basement from a lithium-ion e-bike battery that had exploded while being charged.

The estimated damage to the home is $150,000, and the Park Ridge Fire Department issued a reminder to the public about the potential risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. Executive Officer Paul Lisowski emphasized the importance of purchasing devices that have been tested by a qualified testing laboratory and following the manufacturer’s instructions at all times.

He urged people to be vigilant while charging these batteries and to immediately stop using the device if they notice any unusual odors, color changes, leaks, or strange noises coming from the battery. Lisowski also emphasized the importance of moving the device away from anything flammable and calling 911 if necessary.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of lithium-ion batteries and the importance of following safety guidelines when using and charging these devices. The quick response and collaboration between multiple fire departments demonstrates the effectiveness of mutual aid in emergency situations, ensuring that incidents are brought under control with minimal damage and risk to occupants.
