Las Vegas Shooting Survivor Dies Years Later from Trauma-Related Health Complications

Las Vegas, Nevada – The infamous shooting that took place on October 1, 2017, in Las Vegas remains etched in the memory of many across the nation. With 60 lives lost and approximately 800 individuals wounded, this tragic event marked the deadliest modern-day shooting in American history.

Following the devastating incident, plans have been set in motion to create a significant memorial at the site of the shooting, located just opposite the Mandalay Bay hotel, where the shooter unleashed a barrage of gunfire from the 32nd floor. Initially, 58 people lost their lives, including the shooter who took his own life, with one more individual succumbing to their injuries post-incident. A subsequent death occurred in November 2024, further adding to the tragedy.

One of the victims of the horrific shooting was Kristin A. Babik, aged 31, who tragically passed away years later. Despite surviving the night of the Jason Aldean concert where she was shot, Kristin’s obituary in the Gainesville Sun revealed the severe physical and emotional toll she endured. The obituary stated that her passing was due to a cardiac event brought on by the long-term effects of trauma and associated health complications.

Kristin’s story sheds light on the enduring impact of PTSD on numerous individuals affected by the shooting. The ripple effects of such a traumatic event extend to the 20,000 concert attendees present that night, as well as the numerous county and city firefighters and medical personnel who provided assistance to the victims. It underscores the importance of commemorating the shooting and honoring its victims – past, present, and potentially in the future, as the wounds of that fateful night continue to haunt many lives.

In reflecting on the aftermath of the tragedy, Rev. Steve Smith, chaplain of the Las Vegas Fire Department, Jeff Babik (Kristin Babik’s brother), and Tennille Pereria, director of the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center, offer valuable insights into the ongoing impact and the necessity of supporting those affected by the shooting. Their perspectives highlight the resilience and unity of the community in the face of such immense loss and trauma, emphasizing the importance of remembrance and healing in the wake of tragedy.
