Orem, Utah — A day after the fatal shooting of political commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson allegedly made light of the incident in an online group chat, jokingly attributing his resemblance to the suspect to a “doppelganger.” Authorities, however, remain uncertain about Robinson’s motives for the shooting.
The exchange took place shortly after the FBI disseminated surveillance images of an individual in a cap and sunglasses captured walking in a campus stairwell. In a Discord chat, a user tagged Robinson’s handle, sharing the images and asking, “wya” — shorthand for “where you at” — alongside a skull emoji. Robinson quickly responded, revealing an unsettling attitude amidst a serious situation.
He further mocked the gravity of the situation by mentioning the FBI’s $100,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the shooter, quipping that he would only accept a portion of it. His comments took a darker turn when he suggested he might need to dispose of a “manifesto and exact copy rifle,” referring to reports of ammunition found at the crime scene. In another bizarre message, he claimed, “I’m actually Charlie Kirk, wanted to get outta politics so I faked my death.”
As the conversation unfolded, another participant in the chat declared, “Tyler killed Charlie!!!!” Hours later, Robinson was detained on suspicion of Kirk’s murder.
Law enforcement reports indicate that Robinson positioned himself on a rooftop approximately 400 feet from the stage of Kirk’s event before firing a single shot that took the commentator’s life. After the incident, he turned himself in to police in southwestern Utah, following encouragement from family members and friends.
