Killing of Arkansas Hikers: Schoolteacher Charged in Gruesome Attack That Left Two Parents Dead and Their Daughters Safe

SPRINGDALE, Ark. — A local schoolteacher has confessed to fatally attacking a couple hiking with their two young daughters at Devil’s Den State Park, authorities reported. The tragic incident left the victims, Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, dead—while their daughters, aged 7 and 9, escaped unharmed.

The Brinks were discovered Saturday on a walking trail at the popular park, known for its scenic views and hiking trails. Local officials confirmed the children are currently under the care of family members. Following a five-day investigation and numerous tips from the community, Andrew James McGann, 28, was arrested in Springdale, approximately 40 minutes from the state park.

Arkansas State Police are working to understand the motive behind the killings. Col. Mike Hagar emphasized that investigators do not have reason to believe McGann had any prior connection to the victims or their daughters. Reports indicate that the couple had recently relocated from South Dakota to Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Just days before the tragic event, they had established utility services in their new home.

Clinton Brink was slated to begin a new job as a milk delivery driver shortly after the incident, while Cristen was a licensed nurse in multiple states prior to the move. Preliminary reports suggest Clinton Brink was the first victim attacked before Cristen returned to assist him after ushering their children to safety. The circumstances surrounding her death remain distressing, as authorities have not confirmed whether the children witnessed the assaults.

Family members remembered the couple as heroes. Their dedication to the safety of their children was highlighted in statements made after their deaths. “They died protecting their little girls,” the family said.

McGann has been charged with two counts of capital murder and is currently being held without bond. Washington County prosecutor Brandon Carter has not clarified whether McGann has legal representation. Meanwhile, McGann’s employment status with local schools has been under scrutiny; he had recently been hired for the upcoming academic year, though he had not yet interacted with students or families.

In Texas, McGann faced concerns related to classroom management and resignations from previous positions, including one where he was placed on administrative leave. Despite these issues, it was reported he holds active teaching licenses in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma without infractions.

The police urged individuals who visited the park on the day of the attack to review any footage they may have captured. The response from the community was significant, yielding valuable information that played a crucial role in locating McGann.

Devil’s Den State Park, encompassing over 2,500 acres, draws visitors for its natural beauty and outdoor activities. However, in the wake of this incident, the park’s trails remain closed to the public. The events have shocked local communities, as many grapple with the loss and the brutality of the crime that unfolded in a place usually associated with family-friendly outings and recreational hiking.
