Katy Apartment Standoff Ends With Two People Dead

The sheriff’s office said deputies did not fire during the standoff.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Harris County investigators are examining the deaths of a man and woman after a Monday standoff that began with a report of a shooting at a Katy-area apartment complex.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the 1000 block of Katy Gap Road at 1:52 p.m. after a 23-year-old man called and said he had accidentally shot his girlfriend. The woman, who was 20, was later found dead inside the apartment.

Deputies said the man refused to cooperate after officers arrived. The scene drew SWAT officers and a large law enforcement response near Katy Gap Road, close to Kingsland Boulevard. Authorities kept the area contained while negotiators and tactical officers worked for several hours.

The sheriff’s office said SWAT officers deployed gas into the unit as the standoff continued. The man then retreated to a balcony, where deputies said he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died at the scene.

Gonzalez said no deputies discharged their weapons. Officials have not released the identities of the man or woman, and the exact order of events inside the apartment remains part of the investigation.

The case is being handled as a death investigation. Detectives are expected to determine how the woman died, whether the shooting was accidental as first reported and what happened during the hours before SWAT entered or secured the apartment.

The standoff ended Monday evening with both people dead and no reported injuries to deputies. The sheriff’s office said the circumstances surrounding both deaths remain under review.
