Police said unknown suspects fired into a vehicle near South First and East Reed streets.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — One man died and two other men were wounded after gunfire struck a vehicle early Sunday near downtown San Jose, police said Monday as homicide detectives searched for the suspects.
The shooting is being investigated as San Jose’s 10th homicide of 2026. Police said the three adult male victims were traveling in a vehicle near South First Street and East Reed Street when one or more people fired several shots into it. All three men were taken to hospitals.
Officers were called to the area at about 2:19 a.m. May 31. When they arrived, they found the three men suffering from at least one gunshot wound each, according to the San Jose Police Department. One victim later died at a hospital. Police said the other two men had injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The suspects fled before officers reached the scene, police said. Investigators had not released the dead man’s name by Monday, and no arrests had been announced. Police also had not described the suspects or said whether the shooting was targeted. The motive and full circumstances remained under investigation.
The shooting happened in a busy downtown area near the South First Street corridor, not far from restaurants, apartments and the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. Police closed parts of South First Street and East Reed Street while detectives and crime scene investigators worked in the area.
San Jose police said the homicide unit took over the case after the victim died. Detective Sgt. Martinez and Detective Aboud were assigned to the investigation. Police asked people with information to contact the homicide unit as detectives reviewed evidence and worked to identify the people involved.
The case remained open Monday. Police said the two surviving victims were expected to recover, while investigators continued looking for the person or people who fired into the vehicle.
