KOPPAL, India — In a significant legal outcome, a district court has sentenced three men to death for the brutal gang-rape of two women, including an Israeli tourist, and the murder of a male companion during an attack in March 2025 in a popular heritage town. The court classified the case as one of the “rarest of rare” incidents, reflecting the severity of the crimes committed.
The assault occurred near Sanapur Lake in Hampi, Karnataka, where a group of tourists, including three men and two women, were stargazing when they were ambushed. The attackers, armed with physical aggression, demanded money before turning violent. In the chaos, they pushed three male tourists into a canal, while the women were assaulted. Tragically, one of the male tourists from Odisha was found dead the following day.
The men convicted—22-year-old Mallesh alias Handi Malla, 21-year-old Sai alias Chaitanya Sai, and 27-year-old Sharanappa alias Sharanabasavaraj—were found guilty of multiple charges, including gang-rape and attempted murder, on February 6. The court’s decision came after evaluating the heinous nature of their actions, particularly since they targeted both domestic and international visitors in a well-known tourist area.
During the sentencing, the judge emphasized the need to impose the harshest punishment to ensure justice and promote safety for citizens and travelers alike.
