Judge Found Guilty of Shooting Sleeping Boyfriend

HARRISBURG, PA – A former judge from Dauphin County has been convicted of attempting to murder her ex-boyfriend by shooting him in the head while he slept. Sonia McKnight, who previously served as a judge, was found guilty of first-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault after a jury deliberated for less than two hours. McKnight is scheduled for sentencing in May.

The trial, which captured significant public attention, unfolded over three days. The jury was instructed by the judge on how to approach their deliberations, emphasizing that McKnight’s decision not to testify should not be held against her. However, the prosecution argued convincingly that the evidence pointed to McKnight as the shooter.

During the trial, 24 witnesses testified, and 50 pieces of evidence were presented. Key testimonies came from Michael McCoy, the victim, who described waking up in excruciating pain, initially believing he was suffering from a brain aneurysm. Forensic experts testified about the presence of gunshot residue on McCoy’s clothing and hands, as well as on McKnight’s attire, although the defense argued that the prosecution failed to meet the burden of proof.

The courtroom was filled with tension as the verdict was read. McCoy, sitting in the front row, appeared relieved, while McKnight remained expressionless as she was led away in handcuffs. Her bail was increased to $3 million, and she was taken into custody immediately.

McKnight’s legal troubles have been ongoing. In 2019, she was investigated for shooting her estranged husband but was cleared on self-defense grounds. In 2020, she faced charges of tampering with evidence but was acquitted. In 2023, she was suspended without pay over allegations of theft and misconduct.

The upcoming sentencing hearing on May 28 will determine how long McKnight will serve in state prison. The case has highlighted issues of judicial conduct and accountability, with McKnight’s legal history raising questions about the integrity of those in positions of authority.

The trial’s outcome has left a lasting impact on the community, as residents grapple with the implications of a former judge being convicted of such a serious crime. As McKnight awaits sentencing, the case serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges within the legal system.
