Iranian Revolutionary Guard Claims Responsibility for Deadly Attack Near US Consulate in Erbil, Iraq

ERBIL, IRAQ – The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for a series of explosions near the U.S. Consulate in Erbil, Iraq. The attack resulted in four deaths and six injuries, according to the Kurdistan Regional Security Council. Coalition forces also reportedly shot down three drones near Erbil airport. In response to the attacks, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq Masrour Barzani condemned the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and called on the federal government in Baghdad to take action against the violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that the attacks were targeted at the “headquarters of spies” and “anti-Iranian terrorist gatherings in parts of the region” with ballistic missiles. However, a U.S. official confirmed that no American facilities were impacted, and there were no reports of damage to infrastructure or injuries to U.S. personnel.

The Iraqi government is set to hold a security meeting to address the “Iranian violation of Iraqi territory and Iranian non-compliance with the security agreement between the two countries.” This incident comes as tensions continue to escalate between the United States and Iran, with previous attacks and confrontations in the region.

As the situation unfolds, it is essential to monitor for updates and further developments. The conflict between Iran and the United States has had significant implications for the Middle East, and the recent attacks in Iraq highlight the ongoing volatility in the region. The targeting of the U.S. Consulate in Erbil raises concerns about the safety and security of diplomatic missions and American personnel in the area.
