The Irish Athletic Boxing Association has strongly condemned the incident as “abhorrent” and has decided to suspend the remainder of the U14 national championships, which were scheduled to continue over the weekend.
According to reports, a group of individuals, with at least three brandishing sharp weapons, stormed into Castlerea Boxing Club during the quarter-finals on Friday, allegedly searching for a specific male. Chaos ensued for nearly a minute before the intruders fled the scene. The authorities later confirmed that a man in his 40s suffered serious injuries and was transported to Galway University Hospital for treatment, though his condition is currently reported as non-life-threatening.
In response to the violent incident, the IABA released a statement expressing deep concern over what transpired during the final stages of the championship. The association emphasized the inappropriateness of such violence occurring at a youth sporting event and received support from the entire Irish boxing community in denouncing the actions.
