Investigation Demand: LA Civil Rights Leaders Challenge ICE Agent’s Justification in New Year’s Eve Shooting

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Civil rights advocates are demanding an independent inquiry into the fatal shooting of a man by an off-duty ICE agent during New Year’s celebrations at their shared apartment complex. Activists argue that the circumstances surrounding the incident require thorough examination to ensure justice is served.

Najee Ali, executive director of Project Islamic Hope, expressed his belief that Keith Porter Jr. was unjustly killed by the agent. “The claim from the Department of Homeland Security that Porter was an ‘active shooter’ is not only misleading but completely false,” Ali stated, pointing to eyewitness accounts that suggest Porter was discharging his rifle into the air as part of a traditional New Year’s celebration rather than targeting anyone. According to Ali, numerous witnesses are prepared to corroborate this version of events.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight on December 31, when LAPD officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire at the apartment complex located on Roscoe Boulevard. Investigators noted that the off-duty agent allegedly intervened in what he perceived to be a life-threatening situation. In their defense, Homeland Security stated that the agent exchanged gunfire with Porter, who was firing shots into the air, as he aimed to safeguard himself and those around him.

Residents described the chaotic scene, recalling a barrage of gunfire that they initially mistook for fireworks. “It was a lot of shots—more than ten. We got scared,” one tenant told reporters, expressing disbelief over the New Year festivities taking a violent turn.

The agent, who has yet to be publicly identified, was unharmed during the exchange. Following the shooting, he contacted the LAPD to report the incident, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event. While officials have not released the identities of those involved, Ali has called for the immediate disclosure of body-camera footage, ballistic evidence, and witness testimonials to ensure accountability.

As the LAPD continues its investigation, the clamor for transparency and justice grows louder. Activists are pushing for the California Attorney General to lead an independent review of the case, emphasizing the need to address potential misconduct and misinformation. “We cannot let this incident go overlooked,” Ali urged. “There must be accountability for any false statements or actions resulting from this tragic event.”

The shooting has ignited debate over the conduct of law enforcement and the potential risks posed by armed agents responding to civilians in recreational settings. As the investigation unfolds, community members and legal experts alike are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for clarification and justice for Porter and his family.
