Inmate at Hernando County Jail Faces Murder Charge After Violent Attack on Another Inmate Recorded on Security Cameras

Spring Hill, Fla. – An inmate facing a murder charge at the Hernando County jail following a violent attack on another inmate was captured on security cameras, Sheriff Al Nienhuis revealed Tuesday. The incident, involving William Gillespie assaulting Jory Van Antwerp, took place in the medical housing unit last Friday.

Gillespie was seen kicking Van Antwerp in the head multiple times, resulting in injuries that initially did not appear serious. However, Van Antwerp’s condition deteriorated throughout the day, leading to a transfer to the hospital where doctors diagnosed him with a brain bleed. Tragically, Van Antwerp passed away shortly after.

Sheriff Nienhuis described the attack as unexpected and unprovoked, adding that there was no apparent reason for Gillespie’s actions. Despite claims that Van Antwerp was being disruptive, fellow inmates stated that there was no interaction between the two. Gillespie, who had a history of aggression toward other inmates, now faces a second-degree murder charge.

Gillespie’s criminal record includes 11 felony arrests and five convictions, but he was not classified as a violent felon requiring separation from other inmates. Van Antwerp, on the other hand, was incarcerated for alleged sexual assault against a child aged between 12 and 18. The sheriff believes Gillespie was unaware of Van Antwerp’s charges, emphasizing that the attack was impulsive and opportunistic.

The tragic incident has left the community stunned, prompting discussions about safety measures within the jail system. Moving forward, authorities are looking into ways to prevent similar incidents and ensure the well-being of both inmates and staff. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on seeking justice for the victim and holding the perpetrator accountable for his actions.

Sheriff Nienhuis expressed his condolences to Van Antwerp’s family and reiterated the commitment to upholding safety and security within the correctional facility. The case serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges faced in the correctional system, highlighting the need for vigilance and proactive measures to prevent violence and tragedy among inmates.
