Horrific Crimes: Man Accused of Murdering Family Members Appears in Court

SOMERSET, Ky. – An accused man faced court on Wednesday to answer for horrific crimes against his own family members. Austin Prather is charged with murder and other offenses in the deaths of his father, Ardyth “Trae” Prather III, and his grandfather, Ardyth “Ray” Prather, Jr., as well as the attempted murder of his grandmother, Joann.

The court appearance in Pulaski County was brief and procedural, with Prather’s case being the only one on the docket at 10 a.m. The events leading to his appearance started in early November and ended with Prather being found in Indiana after fleeing the crime scene at his family’s homes.

Prather, who is currently without a job, was appointed two public defenders as his lawyers. The prosecutor stated that they are still reviewing evidence and speaking to witnesses in the case, with plans to set a pre-trial conference two months out. Although the motive remains unclear, the indictment charges Prather with robbery in the first degree involving his grandparents, as well as tampering with physical evidence.

No discussions or arguments regarding Prather’s bond took place, as it is currently set to “no bond allowed.” A pre-trial conference has been scheduled for February 22 to further address the case.
