MINNEAPOLIS — A glimmer of optimism has emerged for a 12-year-old girl severely injured in a tragic church shooting in Minneapolis last week. Although her neurosurgeon speaks cautiously about her prognosis, the medical team is monitoring her condition closely in hopes of recovery.
Sophia Forchas, the most critically hurt child among the survivors of the August 27 incident at the Church of the Annunciation, is fighting for her life. The church, bustling with students from the nearby Annunciation Catholic School, was hosting its inaugural Mass of the academic year when a gunman opened fire. This devastating attack claimed the lives of two students and left 21 others injured before the shooter died by suicide.
Sophia remains in intensive care at Hennepin Healthcare, a facility renowned for its trauma care. Dr. Walt Galicich, her neurosurgeon, provided updates during a press conference, detailing the extent of the damage caused by a bullet lodged in her brain. Emergency surgery was necessary to relieve pressure, which involved removing part of her skull.
Despite these severe injuries, Dr. Galicich noted that Sophia is showing signs of awareness, occasionally opening her eyes and exhibiting slight movement in her right leg. However, she remains unresponsive to commands and continues to be kept in a medically induced coma to manage swelling. “It’s day by day,” Dr. Galicich stated. “We’re more hopeful for her survival than we were last week.”
Sophia’s father, Tom Forchas, described his daughter as “kind, brilliant, and full of life” as he reflected on the harrowing events that transpired. He conveyed the traumatizing experience of learning about the attack during a moment of prayer. Tom’s 9-year-old son was also in the church at the time but fortunately was unharmed. He expressed unwavering gratitude to the medical staff, especially his wife, Amy, a pediatric critical care nurse who has devoted herself to being by Sophia’s side.
The global outpouring of support has not gone unnoticed by the family. “Sophia has received prayers from across the globe,” Tom noted, emphasizing the immense comfort this has provided them during such a difficult time. He acknowledged the collective strength and compassion from the community, stating, “Sophia is strong. She is fighting. And she will win this fight for all of humanity.”
In conjunction with the family’s tragedy, students across Minnesota and other parts of the country have staged walkouts to advocate for stricter gun control measures. Demonstrators gathered at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul, demanding lawmakers act to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The protests were coordinated by Students Demand Action, a movement linked to Everytown for Gun Safety, which seeks to promote safe gun policies.
The tragic event at the Church of the Annunciation has resonated deeply with many, igniting conversations about safety in schools and community spaces. As Sophia continues her battle for recovery, the community remains united in their hope and commitment to change in the aftermath of this heartbreaking shooting.
