Ahmed al Ahmed, originally from Syria, recounted how he confronted one of the gunmen in a bid to stop further bloodshed.
In footage confirmed by authorities, al Ahmed is seen tackling one of the assailants, Sajid Akram, from behind and wrestling a long firearm away from him. Al Ahmed later shared his thoughts from that moment, stating, “I knew I had to act. I was focused on warning him to drop the weapon and to stop what he was doing.”
During the attack on December 14, attendees at the Hanukkah celebration faced grave danger. The incident has been classified as Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996, prompting widespread condemnation and grief across the nation. Police confirmed that Akram was ultimately shot dead at the scene, while his son, Naveed, has been charged with multiple offenses, including 15 counts of murder.
Al Ahmed, who suffered gunshot wounds during the altercation, expressed remorse amidst his sense of duty. “I saved many people that day, but the loss of lives weighs heavily on me,” he stated. His actions have been credited with preventing an even larger tragedy.
Reflecting on his decision to intervene, al Ahmed recalled the emotional drive that propelled him to act. “There was a surge of energy within me,” he explained. “I couldn’t bear to witness innocent lives being taken or see people crying out for help.” The resolve he felt, he said, came from deep within, compelling him to act despite significant personal risk.
In the aftermath of the attack, the community rallied around al Ahmed, raising over A$2.5 million to support him during his recovery. He has undergone multiple surgeries due to the injuries sustained while confronting Akram, with his spirit remaining unbroken. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised al Ahmed during a hospital visit, calling him “the best of our country.” New South Wales Premier Chris Minns highlighted his bravery, labeling him a “real-life hero.”
