Hanover Party Shooting: New Details Emerge in Teen’s Tragic Death

Hanover County, Virginia – Court documents have shed light on the events surrounding a tragic shooting at a party in Hanover County that claimed the life of 16-year-old Matthew Devine on April 6. The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident that resulted in the loss of a student at Colonial Heights High School.

The night of the shooting, deputies were responding to a large party in the area of Agape Lane and McClellan Road when they received reports of gunshots and a male with a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, they discovered Devine’s body near a residence, and attempts to render aid were unsuccessful. The tragic incident unfolded after an altercation between Devine and an unknown male, resulting in gunfire that led to Devine’s death.

James Rashawn Smith, 18, of Ashland, stands accused of second-degree murder and related charges in connection to Devine’s death. Another suspect, Jayvian Marrece Threatt, faces charges of attempted murder and using a firearm during a felony.
