LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — A shooting during homecoming festivities at Lincoln University claimed the life of one individual and left six others injured late Saturday evening, authorities reported. The incident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. near the International Cultural Center, where current students and alumni were gathered to celebrate following a football game.
Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe stated investigators believe multiple shooters were involved but emphasized that it does not appear they had a premeditated intention to inflict mass harm. So far, one person has been arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon without a license, and authorities are working to determine if that firearm was used in the incident.
The victim who lost their life, identified as 25-year-old Jujuan Jeffers from Wilmington, Delaware, succumbed to injuries sustained from a gunshot wound to the head shortly after midnight. The other injured individuals, aged between 20 and 25, are reportedly recovering, though specific updates on their conditions have not been disclosed. Among the wounded are both a current student and a graduate, alongside several individuals not associated with the university.
Following the shooting, authorities have been collecting evidence and have urged anyone with footage or information to reach out to the FBI to assist in the investigation. District Attorney de Barrena-Sarobe declined to provide specific details regarding the number of shots fired as officials worked to recover all bullet casings from the scene.
The university, located about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia, plans to remain closed on Monday, with an event set to take place for students and the local community to address the tragedy. Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee described the emotional toll the incident has taken on the community, noting the stark contrast between the anticipated celebration and the tragic events that unfolded.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences via social media, emphasizing that his administration stands ready to support the university community during this difficult time.
As investigations continue, law enforcement agencies including county detectives, state police, and the FBI are collaborating to ensure a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which has deeply affected a campus long celebrated for its rich legacy.
